lil_alegria01.jpg This race will be Jim's first solo TranPac and his second race to Hawaii having crewed on the Division III winner in the 2001 TransPac. "That particular race was a fun experience for me and was really the point where I started seriously thinking about doing the solo race some day." Jim and Anne have been actively sailing, racing and restoring Alegria since buying her locally in 1998. By that time, the boat had already seen quite a bit of the world. Built in England, she spent some years in the Mediterranean, sailed across the Atlantic, was trucked from Maine to California and sailed to Mexico "She's an excellent boat for a singlehander and I'm looking forward to adding Hawaii to her long resume."

Race preparations really began some months in advance of last year's LongPac race and include new autopilot, various electrical upgrades, new instrumentation, standing and running rigging, solar power, some new sails and a lot more. "A good thing about finally being out on the water is that I can give the credit card some rest!"

"I really only have three objectives for the race, pretty much in this order: One is to get the boat and me to the finish in essentially one piece, two is to have fun and three is to do well in the race. But I have to admit, how well I do on the third goal is likely to have a lot of impact on the other two!"

Navigation: Four Garmin GPS's (one fixed and three handheld), Raytech 4.1 charting software running on an HP laptop, Furuno radar, B&G instruments, Weems and Plath sextant.

Steering: Primary: B&G Network Pilot, Secondary: CPT wheel pilot, Tertiary: me

Food: Whatever Anne puts on the boat but initially it will mostly be prepared food that just needs reheating and lots of mixed nuts. Later when that's gone, it'll probably be pasta and canned stuff.

Special thanks: Anne, without whose help it would not have been possible to get the boat ready for the start. To the SSS for putting on the race. To Ed Broberg for helping with the sails. To the many people who provided help and advice in some way. Finally thanks to my family, who if they think this is crazy, at least have kept those thoughts to themselves!
