If you are thinking about doing the 2016 SHTP, introduce yourself here! We are already getting inquiries on our general club email.

I, for one, am pretty seriously thinking about it.

A long time ago, in regards the SHTP of that age, I said: "don't talk about it...just do it". And then came the Nike spokesman, Michael Jordan! Oh well....

I can't agree more with that sentiment. Checking on the back history I see that "Just Do It" debuted in 1988; your first SHTP was 1984. Was it really just that easy to get up and go? I guess with 30K ocean miles under your belt at that time, this made it easier to contemplate. I've been coastal sailing for one year now and only a few times single-handed offshore. So I am really interested in the thought process to undertake such a thing, both to the dialogue that is going on inside my head and what others are contemplating. No matter what level of experience, however, I would think that the first time has got to be a little nerve-wracking...

As to Bob's comment, I also saw a statement of yours that said 2010 was DEFINITELY your last SHTP. Yet I was one of the welcoming committee to Harrier when you arrived in Hanalei in 2014 and you were there in 2012, too. As you know, it's all talk right now, but it would be great to race with you in 2016 :-)

Harrier
02-25-2015, 12:55 PM
Yes, it was in 1984. I had already done the SoPac "Milk run" doublehanded and singlehanded once to HI and a second time to HI doublehanded....all in my lightweight, slow wood sloop. Was just waiting 'til I found the right boat...which I did in spring 1984. Started right away setting it up pretty much like the wood sloop (which was also fractional, fin keel, spade rudder). Headed for LaPaz for Xmas '83, then back for the '84 SHTP. I always try to be relatively competitive, but that race pretty much was learning the boat. Feeling comfortable alone in the ocean has never been a problem. And you really are alone, altho nowadays with the 406 EPIRB, good radio commo, good tools and spares, a life raft (LAST POSSIBLE RESORT!!!) and enuf experience, the only thing to be concerned about is the potential for injury or other health affliction.

Which brings me to your last sentence. I would dearly love to to it once again, and as of this moment (just having returned from my thrice weekly gym workout) I would feel pretty comfortable about a repeat. But I would then be 86 years old with another 1 1/2 year of wear and tear on my bod from now. So don't make any plans based upon my participation......

I'm finally throwing two hats into the ring. My wife, Chris, and I are both in for 2016. I'll be sailing a J/120 and she will be sailing our Schumacher 28 (some might remember After Math at RYC). spadefoot (fka After Math) has undergone a number of changes since she was last in the Bay and we are comfortable now that we can add the necessary stuff for a SH ocean crossing. Spadefoot will come back on a trailer. Shearwater (the J/120) will be sailed back.

I'm planning to do my qualifier in July as part of bringing the boat from the PNW to the Bay. Chris is planning to do her qualifier in the Gulf of Mexico in October since the boat is in Texas now.

Lots of logistics to pull this off, but we feel good about it right now.

I am doing my best to get the Prodigal Son ready to go, and to get me ready to go. I have said before that I dont know if the boat or I am up to the task, but hopefully will know by early Spring after extensive sea trials of us both. However I have been working on it since May of this year, and have certainly invested a lot of time and money in the effort, and I am reasonably optimistic that I can do it.
I will be flying in to attend the Power Management seminar on November 12th, as much to meet other folks who are planning on making the race as to learn about powering the boat up. I hope to see and meet a lot of you there.

We can fit a couple of containers full of dinghies and fuel jugs, and smaller boats can be brought back to SF as deck cargo.

A friend here in the Berkeley marina went from a Dana 24 to a Crealock 37. Trouble is, he spends all his time working on it, upgrading it and hanging out on it, but he rarely sails it. What's up with that?

I've been trying to get him to come out and race. He finds working on the boat to be more challengingly fun than puttering the bay around under sail. (Does that sound like some other people we might know....?)

Welcome Mike! Surely this won't happen to you. And all the best on your new boat :) If I could have figured out how to scuba dive off the PS37, they would have stayed at the top on my list when I was boat shopping.

mikeacro,
Just curious as to why you would take a relatively slow (albeit very seaworthy) monohull over a fast trimaran. You indicated it would be easiier to manage. Is that in sailing it, or in getting it ready for the race?
As I said, its just curiosity, probably driven by the fact that I am very new to trimarans.
Jim

11-06-2015, 07:03 PM
The Corsair 28 trimaran has been a great boat to sail for the past two years. For one thing, it is a much more physically demanding boat to sail. In larger seas, it is amazing fun, but a handful when solo, or crewed. The standard roller boom is difficult at best to reef by yourself in anything other than moderate conditions. Plus, it has no proper sea hood accessing the cabin, just the pop top. Not great for for offshore use. Last but not least, is at 60 years old, I just would like to have a little nicer level of comfort during the trip. Guess I'm going soft in my old age. May consider doing the 2 man in the trimaran the following year in the crewed transpac out of Long Beach. I'm sure at some point in the journey I'll long for those consistent double digit speeds though!
Cheers, Mike

Hi everyone!
I am in for the 2016 SHTP, assuming that everything stays on track. Last February I upgraded from my old Ultimate 20 named Layla to a well-restored 1966 Cal 40 named Shaman. I bought my Cal for the specific purpose of doing this race! I just completed a qualifying sail between October 26 and 29, a couple of weeks ago. Here is the DeLorme inReach MapShare site of the trip: https://share.delorme.com/ThomasBurden

As an offshore racing newbie, I have a lot to learn, but have an excellent boat, and it looks like many experienced teachers in SSS. Thanks to Bob Johnston for the excellent electrical seminar last night.

Well I think I'm in after just navigating the Jibeset website. Can't resist the bug light any longer so Dolfin, my Pacific Seacraft 37 for thirty one years, and I look forward to joining the fleet next July. I agree with the General (and I hope he comes again) that the hardest part might be getting to the starting line as we live in San Diego. I'm a cruiser, not a racer, and have always had my wife on long passages so this is definitely a new experience. Dolfin and I cruised the South Pacific (and North Pacific) many years ago and Mexico more recently and we like it offshore, at least most of the time. I'm flying to Oakland tomorrow for the seminar and hope to meet some of you there.

Like they say on Facebook, "It's complicated." If my math is right, it's $750 plus $160 for the tracker rental (one way). Add $100 for non-SSS members (but recidivists used to be exempt from that).

From the 2016 Race Rules and Conditions:

"2.02 The entry fee schedule is as follows:

[a] If received by the Race Committee on or before the dates shown, the entry fees shall be:
● $100 Interest in doing the SHTP. Due Jan 1. Not refundable.
● $650 Infrastructure support fee. Due Feb 28. Refund of $500 after April 1.
● $400 Sponsored entry fee. Due Feb 28. Refund of $300 after April 1.
● $100 Non-member fee. Due Feb 28. Refundable if withdrawing.
● $160 Tracker rental fee for the race to Kauai. Due Feb. 28. Nonrefundable after April 1.
● $190 Tracker rental fee for the return trip to San Francisco. Unit due back to SF by Sept 1. Due Feb 28. Nonrefundable after May 1.
● Private Tracker Data late fee will be assessed if the required tracker data (see the 2016 Communication Plan) is not received by June 15, 2016: Fee is $50.

[b] If Infrastructure fee is received by the Race committee after February 28, 2016 an additional $100 shall be added to each fee, except sponsored entrants. An additional $300 shall be added for sponsored entrants.
[c] All fees must be received by the Race Committee by May 1, 2016."

Actually that Allied XL2 is mine. it was the cover boat on the August 1973 "Yachting" magazine, back when it was owned by Shelby Friedrichs, and was frequently skippered by his son, Buddy Friedrichs, who was a gold medal winner in Dragons, in the Olympics back in that era. it is a beautiful keel/centerboard 22000 pound, Sparkman and Stevens design influenced by the CCA rule, which favored yawls.
