This is to let people know that preparations for the 2019 LongPac (July 3-9) are under way. We will be opening registrations soon through Jibeset, with publication of the NOR, SIs, safety equipment list, and communication plan. The 2017 documents are a good general guide to the race and can be found here: https://www.sfbaysss.org/main/longpac-2017/.

A heads-up: there will be changes to the communications plan this year to make it more consistent with the Singlehanded Transpac requirements. This includes the requirement for a satellite tracker on each boat (Spot, InReach, IridiumGo) and the elimination of SSB as an option for daily check-ins.

I (Tom Boussie) will serving as race chair. Feel free to reach out to me directly (650-248-eight one six four, tboussie at gmail dot com, or PM me on this forum). if you have any questions.

Please reply to this thread if you are considering doing the race so that we can begin to get a high-level headcount.

That's the plan. The projects are numerous and in process.

Not that I have a dog in this fight one way or the other, but why would you eliminate SSB as an option for check in? At least keep it in for people who'd like to check their gear and will have some incentive to do so. I wish I'd had mine ready for that -- I finally figured things out during the long haul back...

The reality, from my POV, is that the logistics of running the race over an extended time frame, compounded by vagaries of SSB in a mast dense environment, make the RC playing a role in a twice or even once daily radio not generally practical from Urban SF.
That doesn't necessarily preclude SSB as an option to check in; one could check in to shore support on the SSB; assuming an email or phone call from shore side support is still accepted for the Proof of Life daily check-in / Confirmation.
one way or the other, the race is meant to test systems for the SHTP, so it makes sense to me to align them as much as is foreseeable.
If you plan to use your SSB a lot on the SHTP, great, by all means test the systems.
By the same token, requiring the tracker makes sense to me if it will be required for Kauai;
speaking from experience the tracker data is much more accessible to the RC, USCG, Web Site Feed, etc. and simplifies things a great deal generally, which is non trivial.

I plan to participate. I am schlepping down to the Bay next month for the SH Farallons and then back again in July for the LongPac. Preparations have been several years in the making.

Island Rider - Can you elaborate on your boat? Schlepping down from were? SH or DH?

If I had the surplus funds I would have installed an SSB.
I didn't miss having it during Long Pac or the SHTP
For Long Pac I used the InReach for tracking and coms.
During the SHTP I added the Iridium Go for WX, email, and voice calls.
Returning from Hanalei I used a portable SSB receiver to listen to the net.

At this time it looks like i will have another commitment on July 6.
Which means I won't be planning to do the race, but will be available for race committee. Except Saturday and Sunday.

I am coming from Friday Harbor WA. Single handed on a B-25. I have been doing single handed races here in the Northwest for several years getting the boat dialed in.

Nice! I can hear those thundering hoofs.

Note the big genoa is ready to hoist if the wind goes light outside. Think he's done this a few times?

I just grabbed the 2017 safety requirements. Do y'all anticipate any significant changes?

Joan is making noises about getting me a PLB for my birthday, nice!!

It appears that the few remaining Safety at Sea seminars are full....still waiting to hear from the coordinator of the one in Marina Del Rey.

UPDATE: there is still some space left in the Santa Monica Windjammers seminar

Online courses are available.
https://www.ussailing.org/education/adult/safety-at-sea-courses/
SSS races require the half day course at minimum, which is the Coastal Safety at Sea course.
https://www.sfbaysss.org/main/racing/ocean-racing-requirements/

I did the coastal course in person, the offshore course online, and a hands on class in person.
An online course is easily done in a day or a couple of evenings.

HI Tom and gang.. I'm hoping to do the race, but as a newbie have a few questions/concerns :) Regarding AIS receivers.. having no experience whatsoever in this area, do folks have recommendations? I see I could upgrade my VHF (I have an Icom currently) to a unit that includes AIS receiver capability.. any suggestions, pros/cons, etc? Is it possible to rent a portable unit? Other options other than a big investment before I find out via the LongPac if I wish to pursue ocean racing in the future.. this would be my 'test drive'!

Also, it was discussed having a seminar or two sometime on the earlier side to help out.. any dates or word on this at this time? I'll be out of town June 20-27th, and if one is happening the sooner the better just to help get things prepared. Any info helpful.. thanks mucho!

Hi Michael -
you're on the right track with the AIS... the baseline is to upgrade your existing VHF to one with AIS reception and display. Most people seem to have settled on Standard Horizon's version of this... current model# is, I think, the GX2200.
What you will want is the model with integrated AIS and GPS. Probably in the neighborhood of $250-300; you'd simply replace the ICOM.
Doubtful that there is a rental solution available that fits the requirements, but I don't know.

Tracker's are a somewhat more personal choice.
The current LongPac rules allow both Iridium Satellite based units (Garmin's (ne DeLorme) various InReach models; Also the Iridium GO!) as well as Spot's units, which use the Globalstar system.
As long as you can send a message from it, you're probably OK.
For my money, I would favor the Iridium units; that's based on the satellite coverage. Iridium is a truly global system... Globalstar is primarily land-centric.
Notably, Spot is unlikely to be accepted for the SHTP for this reason.

If you like to tinker ... Consider Daisy AIS receiver or similar widgets :-)

I'm currently running the Standard Horizon GX2200 w/AIS receive.
The manual is clear and setting up the proximity warning alarm is fairly simple.

The in reach explorer tracker, for me, allows tracking, text messaging, simple weather and low cost data plan.
These first two items were all I used for the 2017 LongPac.

I used the iridium go during the SHTP. Allowed me to send some photos, text, email, download GRIBS, and GMDSS, will also do tracking duties.

Thanks guys... Great tips, sounds like the GX2200 would be a good fit!

Great radio. For <$100 you can broadcast the GPS and AIS to wifi to be received by charting applications on tablets and phones.

I know I slept better knowing the ships could see me, as well as me seeing them. It's a bigger investment in kit though.

And an onslaught of entries on this final day to do so. I predict Bob will be much more comfortable than many.

I may have to forgo the bath on this trip. At certain angles the hot water sloshes over the edge of the tub.
