View Full Version : Update on June 13 SH Farallones - NO RACE THAT DAY!

I am extremely disappointed to report that we have not been issued a Coast Guard permit to run the SH Farallones race next Saturday June 13, as we had hoped.

The CG is taking an extremely conservative approach to issuing permits, particularly regarding the need to have relevant county health departments give permission. It has been a struggle to engage with the majority Bay Area counties, with many failing to even respond to repeated requests for meetings (including SF County).

The SSS continues to work with the YRA and USCG to communicate the inherent safety of short-handed sailing as it relates to social distancing and risk of C-19 transmission. We are still hoping to reschedule the SH Farallones, but I am reluctant to commit to a target date until we have further clarity from the governing agencies.

As things stand, we are still planning to run the re-scheduled Round The Rocks race in July. I will keep everyone updated on the timing and race format when we know more.

Thanks Tom for the update. A disappointment for sure. Out of curiosity, for a race to the Farallones do we need more than SF County permission ? We have Marin, I assume they are also required ? Boats heading the start may transistion through several counties, are they involved in permissions as well ? Seems unlikely.

Brian

Thanks for the effort. Super frustrating as the SSS (at least for a Singlehanded ONLY race) should be the first be able to get a permit as there are NO social distancing issues. So the USCG issues event permits but now we have to defer to EACH county around the bay to get permission to use the bay/ocean? People are out in large numbers everywhere, many without masks, certainly not social distancing. For weeks now parks are full, beaches are full, trails are full, roads are getting full, but 1 person on a boat isn't allowed a permit, sad. Most counties now allow groups of people to socialize (social "bubble" of 12 in Alameda Co). There is a whole crewed offshore series starting on June 13 (LA county).... curious if they get a permit.

And then I see this which makes my blood boil....... Do each of these businesses have to get permission from county health, no.... just simply follow guidelines.

"California to let schools, gyms, bars reopen next week"

"The state’s guidance will also include rules on hotels, casinos, museums, zoos and aquariums and the resumption of music, film and television production."

"The state has already allowed most counties to reopen restaurants, hair salons, churches, and retail stores with modifications."

Which counties did respond? Start and finish in one of those? The first SHF finished off Sigler's place in the Estuary - not sure if it started there too.

Just drove across town and there are huge crowds everywhere, long lines, no social distancing, very few masks. I can shop at stores, grocery, drug, buy cars, get my hair cut, etc. I simply don't understand why the USCG doesn't issue a permit and let us, just like everyone else gets to, follow the public guidelines for our county/counties while in transit to the race start/finish line. I can legally do ALL of that right now in ANY county in the Bay Area. Have the USCG been pulling over the large number of boats out sailing/motoring with multiple people to check their residency status? Of course not..... and we simply want to race alone. Perplexed.... vent over.

I have to agree...this is pretty frustrating and not very rational..
