Do any of you out there with long memories or super data bases recall the effect of el Nino on the "high" and sailing to Hawaii?

The SHTP's in 1988, 1992 and 1998 occurred at the end of El Nino cycles, based on a consensus of weather-watchers (including NOAA). The El Nino ending in 1998 was the strongest ever recorded.

Perhaps participants in those races could offer their recollections of the location of the High and other weather factors?

I've been looking for data on this as well but didn't seem to find any trends. It would be interesting to hear from someone who's raced in both El Nino years and non-event years.

I interpreted the NWS's long-term forecast as saying the El Nino conditions will end in the next couple months.

There was also an article somewhere about Westerly Wind Bursts (WWB) during El-Nino years, which sounds pretty unpleasant.
