I read this evening on Sailing Anarchy that Koh Samia (Mini 6.5 #714) lost the keel off Marina Del Rey in Santa Monica Bay. He is ok.

He was prepping the boat for the 2012 SSS TransPac, and this is a bit of a set-back, to say the least. Words of encouragement would be a good thing.

Wow...that really sucks!! Glad the skipper is Ok and he has had a chance to dry off.

Best wishes for getting the boat back up and running again.

Hi all,

Thanks for the comments, I made it to the lifeguards boat just before she turtled... it would have been pretty messy otherwise.

I remember just having two plans on my mind: how to get the flares container out (and my bag with all the documents) and to get ready to take the liferaft out. Thankfully I didn't fall in the water, because, even being in SoCal, the lifeguards had a 5mm wetsuit on... And now that I think about it, I had the 4mm wetsuit I use to clean the bottom with me... no way my brain processed/remembered so many things...

Also, I've been thinking a lot about those crappy rudders that kept me out of the starting line for the 2010 SHTP... may be it was a good thing after all.

I'll recover from this one somehow, and, as I still want to keep learning singlehanding sailing, I'm sure I'll be there again some day.

As you know Santi, I look forward to sailing with you. Let me know what I can do.

And by the way, Emma's Pocket Rocket will be for sale in November in Brazil.

Plenty of time, Santi ... Mirage's keel was reinforced in the 3 weeks prior to our honeymoon Pacific Cup in '04. Keep on keep'n on!

Hi all,

Thanks for your words of support! Things are slowly moving, as I just got the check from the insurance, and that definitely helps! (but it'll still be uphill for a while...).

In any case they'll keep Koh Samia until the investigation finishes, and, I've been told it will take from 6 months to about a year. So Koh Samia will not be at the start of 2012's SHTP...
