For about half the price of a comparable iPad 2, you can buy a very adequate original iPad, and equip it with any number of Marine GPS navigation apps.

One of my personal favorites is iNavX written by Rich Ray, an SSS regular till he moved to rural Oregon and wrote GPS NavX, MacENC and now iNavX

Another of my favorites is MotionX GPS by Phillipe Kahn's Pegasus racing team

There are dozens of GPS based navigation apps for marine or highway use. Feel free to chime in to this thread with your own favorites.

This software, and the original iPad G3 ( the WiFi only model does not have a built in GPS) and you have a wonderful 10" (diagonal dimension) chart plotter.

When the iPad 2 was released, Gazelle bought thousands of the original iPads and formed a specialized company to handle just that product. Gazelle also has an eBay store to sell all sorts of other electronics stuff.

All iPad models are previously owned, but in superb cosmetic condition. The screens are flawless and casing shows at most very minimal signs of wear from normal handling, such as light scratches. Each iPad comes in the original box with charger, USB cable, and manual. They are first generation models, and the 3G models use AT&T service.

Gazelleipads accept PayPal and major credit cards. Sales tax applies to orders shipped to MA, MD and TX. Orders are shipped promptly via FedEx with rates starting at $7.99. Gazelleipads offer hassle-free returns within 30 days.

Choose Your Model

Apple iPad 16GB WiFI + 3G $379.99

Apple iPad 32GB WiFi + 3G $419.99

Apple iPad 64GB WiFi + 3G $479.99

An iPad hanging somewhere convenient in the cockpit in a water proof iPad bad such as that made by Trendy Digital works for me.

Leaning to rotate the display 90 degrees to prevent the screen polarization from conflicting with my sun glasses polarization was a lesson I learned my first day out with the iPad for navigation.

A fully featured chart plotter including charts for about $500? Works for me.

Your mileage may vary.
