I'm looking for a potential steed for the 2012 race. Does anyone know of a smaller boat (Moore 24/SC27/etc) that would fit the bill that's available? I'm hoping to get a boat with some shorthanded goodies already in place.

You should take 101 to Hanalei...

That Moore 101 is insanely cheap. I've spent more that that this year on gear an maintenance for my 34'-er.

Hmm--oceanslogic, do you know anything detailed about that Moore? Has she been a past racer in the area? From the photos and descriptions, all I can tell is that she's very...green. I'll contact the owner for more info.

Bob, thanks for the link. I've seen a couple of O30s available, but I've kinda-sorta concluded that it might be too much boat for me at the moment...though I'd certianly be tempted by a turn-key shorthanded racer.

Isn't that Rudy's boat? Did he move to Redding?

There are photos of 101 under sail in the 2008 Delta Ditch Run at:

Rudy sold the boat to a guy in Redding. The guy in Redding wants to sell the boat. --Pat B.

does anyone have any more info on 101? like why it had a new spar put in it several years back? what word was done to the rudder, rest of boat, etc? has anyone sailed or raced on it?

thanks

I drove to Redding to see the boat - I'm not a Moore owner, but have read a lot and looked at several. The new mast is apparently because of a dismasting. The fittings are backed with G10, don't know if solid epoxy was put in balsa core. New rudder due to leaks in old rudder. Hull seemed sound, full set of sails but didn't pull them out completely for full inspection. Workable road trailer. Agree new price reasonable, although hull 115 looked like new and sold for 6k about 6 weeks ago (just missed that one). There was another that was singlehanded for I believe $9500 at the Richmond YC Foundation that you can find online (http://www.richmondyc.org/Boats-for-Sale~114217~13823.htm).

Good luck.

"Hurricane" was Al Germain's boat (he now owns "Bandicoot"). I don't think Al posts here but he'll probably be at the meeting next week.

does anyone have any more info about Al's old Moore, "Hurricane"? I tried calling RYC foundation, and left multiple voicemails, but got no response.

It's in the gated dry sailing lot. Rigged for single handing. Sorry, can't remember name of individual who showed it to me. Perhaps a RYC member can show it to you.

Hurricane -this boat is parked in space 81 near mine in the RYC dry storage. i looked at the outside and deck today. looks like it has not been used in over 1 year. has some singlehanded equipment. nice hand-painted graphic faded.

there are 2 cockpit mounts for electronic autopilots, there is a masthead light. there are 2 below waterline thru hulls just in front of keel with either plug or depth sounder transducer (most likely depth and knotmeter). the hull is original gelcoat, off white. the deck is updated stippled gelcoat very nice. There is a thru hull port side just below deck, probably bilge pump. there is a boom kicker. The bottom looks fair, no visible blisters, and the keel hull joint is fair without any cracking. rudder bearing is tight and smooth. it has a road trailer with brakes and lights.

perhaps since it has not been used and is not very actively sold, it could be had for a little less. the parking spot without the boat would be worth >$100/month to RYC.

I'd be interested in Hurricane. I'll be up in Richmond this weekend--any chance of tracking down the owner and taking a look at the boat?

Talon, it appears the owner is the RYC Foundation. In other words the boat was donated. Here's the link:

I think Todd has given a pretty good run-down. Make an offer subject to a survey if desired. It's a Moore - I don't know of anything that can't be fixed. That boat is a past SSS season champion. It's got mojo . . .

Moore 24 #101 has been re-located to Alameda and is Hanalei bound in 2012........

Hurricane is now in my hands. Hawaii bound, come hell or high water, one way or another.

Congrats! Now we're going to have a couple of Moore 24's in the race. Maybe 1 or 2 more and we'll have our own one design class!

One Design? What, too scared to race PHRF against an Olson and a couple Hobies? Or the freakin' WAFI thing? :)

Not only would an OD division be cool, but check the times for the three Moores that did the windy 2004 race - there's a benchmark for you (see the hysterical results).

Then there's the fact that one of the trophies currently in the possession of that Olson 30 owner is a Moore 24 half-hull - that's just not right and needs to be rectified.

Moore 24's, Express 27's, Olson 30's, Hobie 33's, prototype Mini Transats...... This could be EPIC!!!!!

Talon4u, Best of luck with the new yacht. I am currently enjoying my new (to me) Moore 24 as well! I really look forward to having you in the race. I think it would be sick to have a dozen ULDB's racing solo to Hawaii.

US 101 signing off...

Bob,

I feel you on this. Me and that Olson 30 owner have a lot of mutual respect for each other, and will have a very friendly yet competitive rematch in 2012. I'll see what I can do on rectifying the situation.

Haha, I can't wait for the race next year. Talking to you and Greg and Stephen and everyone else tonight makes me really excited about the race next year.
