Hey, I'm wondering who is planning to head out as a group on a qualifier sail in the next couple months... and when?

(I might go if the timing is right--no, Rob, I'm not entering the race! Or I might hang out at Drakes Bay and help with comm.)

Paul,

I am tentatively planning to do my qualifier around the end of April. I can't speak for everyone, but I know that "Cookie Jar", "Rushmoore", "Domino" and some others are also looking to do a qualifier as a group.

"LatePac" was great in 2010. We met up in Sausalito the night before, hung out and ate together and then all went out the gate together at about 4 AM to catch an ebb.

Best,

Ronnie

Hey guys

You can add Little Bo Peep to that list as well. I need a bit of a heads up since I have to fly in but count me in :)

Due to my shoulder injury (on the LONGPAC) I'm a long shot for doing the SHTP but would love to join in on the qualifier.

Ronnie, et al .

Count me in but not on a J105 as originally planned. Bought a Quest 30 from Steve Taft but am looking at more like early to Mid-May. Need to learn to sail the thing first.

As of 18:00, Whitall ("Slacker") had 69 miles to go to finish the 582nm Guadalupe Island Race, thus completing his SHTP qualifier. By the way, he's leading the race! Check the PSSA website for more info.

Go the Slack!

I am shooting for April 20 for the qualifier. Would love to coordinate with others if you are doing the same.

I also need to do a qualifier on my Quest 30. Am thinking Faralones Solo as a warm-up on 12 May and then qualifier a week or so later. Leaves a month to fix anything that breaks.

I am running slightly behind schedule on boat prep and this is my new plan. 2010 we did it exactly 1 month before and I think this year will be the same way for US 101. John, i'd be happy to sail out the gate alongside you if the timing works.

cheers,

ronnie

Looks like i might be able to participate to SHTP. Keep your fingers crossed. Will do my best to take the boat up to SF for some practice races, and if time permits will join you (if more of you are doing it together) for "moral support" during your qualifier. I have just completed the Guadalupe Island race, so i am set to go!!!

Cheers

I really hope you join us for SHTP. I think this race has been needing a mini for a long time... or a fleet of minis!

Is the schedule still real ? Maybe head out the gate May 30 ?

Even Keel is ready! I'm now looking at starting the Late Pac around May 12th, if the weather looks ok.

Howdy all,
I am pushing very hard to get Mouton Noir, the Garcia Passoa 47 ready for the TransPac. Although I did the longPac in it a while ago, I need to do another qualifier. I am hoping to get out the gate circa May 30. Are there others headed out around that time? I am a little flexible, so perhaps we can be out there at the same time.

an interesting thought especially with apparent loss of Farallons race. Are you sure of the date ?

sounds like my entry has been accepted ;-) at least, the check didn't bounce! See you in SF soon. I am planning on taking my boat there probably end of May.

left Friday morning and it was quite a nasty ride!! Was anyone else out there? At least it was quick - 35 knots and lots of breaking waves. Checked the box..

Time is running out to complete the qualifier. Anyone planning to sail out the gate this weekend?
Alex, how long did the qualifier take you?

Hey everyone
I am still needing to do my qualifier and am wondering if anyone else is still needing to go out as well. I have a tentative plan to go out on sunday but I am a bit flexible. I ended up with engine trouble and have been in Sausalito waiting for repairs and should be ready to go after tomorrow. You can email me if you like cjequine@xplornet.com This little chicken would love to have company out there :)

Hey Jen, I noticed Bo Peep's berth empty and wondered if you were out there. Durned engines! Good luck to you, I know you can do it.

101 did her qualifier. Spent a day in a gale and hit 17.8 under double reef and storm jib. At least it was a quick-ish qualifier.

Hi guys,
This seems like a good group to get some inputs on wind strengths in longpac/hawaii races. Specifically curious about the afternoon/evening squalls but overall race as well. I'm pretty familiar with winds in local coastal races such as DHF. Looking to expand my knowledge base in the long pac/hawaii races- particularly above/below 34 knts wind strength (sustained, gusts, max etc). If you could point to a better thread for this topic, let me know. I didn't want to create a new one- maybe I should?
Much appreciated! Thanks!
Bob

Bob, have you read Stan Honey's article about squall management? I think it's on the Pacific Cup website. It was right-on in my experience.

Thanks. I did attend an SSS talk where he presented it. http://2012.pacificcup.org/stan-honeys-weather-advice
Doesn't talk about wind strength. I'm interested in wind reports/forecasts of 34+ knots.

It would be rare to have squalls in a LongPac - squalls are more of a tropical/tradewinds feature. As for LongPac wind strengths, somewhere between blowing like crap and nothing. In my last one I saw 34 knots for parts of it but high twenties was more the norm that year (after the drift-fest along the coast).

During a Summer Hawaii race I would only expect to see 34 knots IN a squall, not the rest of the time, and with good gear you could mostly avoid them if that was necessary. The two years I raced, I doubt I ever saw 30 knots, even during a squall.

hhhmm so its not likely to be 34+ knots. same question for DHF.

DHF is in the Spring when there are still fronts coming in. Different animal. I stopped doing that race 10 years ago.

In the 2004 SH Transpac we had a Gale for the first two days. We had periods of around 35 knots. Never saw 40. I never saw more than 25 on any of the squalls I encountered.

We often see 30+ on the Coastal Cup, that race never seems to disappoint for heavy air downwind runs.
