If you have marine navigation software such as Coastal Explorer, MacENC or iNavX you can connect to a live AIS NMEA data feed. In the TCP/IP NMEA client configuration enter:
Host: 207.7.148.216
Port: 9009
This will work over a cell connection such as that available on an iPhone or iPad 3G.
