Love this!
I can't say that I recognize him but I'd venture an educated guess that we are looking at Tanguy de Lamotte.
Good point! I forgot about the strikes. I do recall recommendations about sticking a battery-powered GPS into the oven (which of course I don't have on my boat). I wonder if an EMP pouch would work...
It does feel like if the intent for the knotmeter is dead reckoning to provide position that the GPS would provide much more accuracy. Of course if the satellite network goes poof then that's that...
Jackie! Where did you find that picture?!?
Wouldn't you know ... Knotmeter doesn't appear in the online Merriam-Webster dictionary.
I checked the latest SER for the SHTP 2023: https://www.jibeset.net/racedoc/JACKY/T004055182/nbrd_1.pdf?1651463772

For those wondering how the sheave broke: the tack got loose when hoisting the job and when pulling the last bit hard, nothing stopped the head from hitting the sheave.
Would anyone have this book and willing to loan/gift?
Reviving this request ... Weekends only.
Thanks for the memories!
Happy retirement days!
Good stuff!
I mean, just the idea of a steady 3 kts breeze seems implausible. There'd be gusts and lulls, wind shifts. I found this interesting:

I'd say ... Maybe theoretically but in real life conditions? You'd need perfect sea conditions, great oversized sails, intent steering (light winds are never steady), a super slick bottom, all dead...
That certainly solidifies the allure of single-handed sailing ...
And here I thought I'd sign up three intrepid sailors for a crossing to Yokohama and back ...
Hello there,
I've been wondering what the legalities are of bringing people aboard your boat. Say you take a couple of friends for a quick cruise to Santa Barbara. You go well offshore, hit a whale,...
