Go to the "Dollar Tree and invest a dollar in a roll of black vinyl tape. Then train yourself to ALWAYS tape the spinnaker halyard snap shackle so it can't open until you want it to.
If you don't,...
Skip's step-by-step rundown on the SHTP is virtually perfect, as far as I'm concerned! Brought back a whole lot of memories, too....
Almost makes me wish I had decided to do the race this year...oh...
Harrier's control "box" is mounted on the aft facing vertical panel of the bridge deck. As with other nearby AP control devices, I can manipulate it while standing below, as well as from most...

Your musings, remembrances and general interesting discussions are very much enjoyed. During my last ten (?) years worth of visiting Hanalei, I noticed that the old "buffalo farm" with the...
Oops! Not looking for something new, since they can't import them to the uSA.
Unrelated, other than being an equipment item search:
I am looking for an ICOM marine SSB transceiver...IC-M710, IC-M700, or IC-M802. Hopefully the one with Ham channels included.

No, Jackie. It's just that everyone knows to avoid DDW as much as possible since it is spelled "S L O W". Not to mention rolly!
True enuf...A "normal" spinnaker has always worked for me on the ONE SHTP occasion that I decided to do DDW for a short while.
Good advice from M. Jefferson...and he's done the race a number of time in two boats. However, insofar as his twin headsail info is concerned, I prefer to use only one pole when using twin headsails...
Agree completely with Rob MacFarland. Can't speak to the mainsail slides since I only use the old fashioned slugs...of which I do always carry spares. Have often carried spare main, but not always....
Living with "dread" is why I carry so many auto pilots. Engines are not evil...just problematic. Sorta like many people....
Thanks, Bob. I must have missed the "or".
I have posted this question before, but it seems to disappear.
Again: What was the trigger for adding the requirement for a "heavy weather foresail" to the entry "hoops" to jump thru for the SHTP? ...
Good points, Phil. And he did have a furler, which reduces foredeck activity requirements. I did note that he wasn't towing the dinghy! In 1980 I singlehanded to Hilo. While tied up in Radio Bay, a...
When using twins, I pole out the windward sail. It feeds air into the leeward headsail, which is trimmed more or less as if it were beam reaching. Looked at from above, looks somewhat like a trimmed...
Hard dinghy on the foredeck and 4 jugs lashed inside the shrouds tell me a lot! Not to mention the tiny foresail in almost every shot....
There used to be a new Miss Rheingold every year. Something else to look forward to while I was at the US Military Academy (Sing Sing, West). We couldn't have the beer, but the newspaper carried the...
I'm planning on it. Lee and her kids will be there. We won't have a house on Weke road; but same one we had last time (called the Bird House) about halfway up toward the main Hanalei intersection....
I generally play Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" on the way out and "Victory at Sea" upon arrival! In between, mostly Bluegrass....
Perhaps store it in HI and go get it later when you have more time????
I'm cracking up here in South Carolina, visualizing Bob J in a miniskirt and bowling shoes...How 'bout purple hair? Hi to all....
"Uniform equipment" and "training requirement" is a good thing. I would agree to that wholeheartedly. But, it seems to me, that what really happens is a constantly moving and changing target. But...
