Default PLB / EPIRB choices - self locating feature ?

I'm looking at a new PLB and noticed another change upcoming. Hate to buy again in a few yrs. Anyone have advise, deals or info

    Thanks , Greg

    From NORCALORC list
    23. 406MHz EPIRB or PLB properly registered to the yacht (EPIRB) or owner (PLB) is required. After 1/1/2016, this device must be self locating.

Greg, I think an EPIRB/PLB with an internal GPS is the ways to go. It will signal your exact location to the first satellite whereas a non-GPS unit will take at least two passes. That's about a 20-30 minute advantage for the Coast Guard to come get you. Half an hour halfway to Hawaii might not be a big deal, but in a coastal situation I think it is.

As you note, the NCORC will require an internal GPS unit in 2016. I plan to buy a GPS EPIRB for the boat this time around and keep my current non-GPS PLB to wear on my lifejacket.

Defender Industries has an ACR Global Fix PRO 406 MHz GPS EPIRB (Category II) for $469.99 + shipping/no tax. That's getting down into PLB prices. -- Pat

Concur with ELAINE. Self locating feature of EPIRB is a must. Without locating feature, SAR must wait for multiple passes. While waiting to locate your EPIRB, SAR will call your emergency contacts asking "do you where the vessel is?" This sends an unnecessary chill into your shoreside support team. Happened to me. Unbeknownst to me, EPIRB was activated by getting wet while we were safe on shore.

Thanks for your thoughts. It makes sense to go that route. My plans are for more, not less coastal stuff. It looks like Hodges has it for $419- http://www.hodgesmarine.com/Acr-Glob...-p/acr2844.htm
It's not looking good for that folding prop I've been drooling for.

Thanks for hodges site- related topic- noticed they have http://www.hodgesmarine.com/Uniden-M...imhs135dsc.htm for a great price and yet google shows a few buck lower options

heres amazon reviews same radio http://www.amazon.com/Uniden-MHS135D.../dp/B007B5ZEAS

Low price due to closeout model (it seems) with 1 receiver instead of newer 2 receiver models (1 dedicated for dsc)
    cheers
