Default Collosion Avoidance - A Script to Assist RC in Identifying Relative Pos'n of Rowers

EVeryone is aware that a fleet of boats are rowing to Hawaii. They left Monterey about 7 days ago. They are using the YB tracking system. I have access to their position data hourly. I would like to see if a volunteer could create a script, in Python or something similar, that could compare all the row boat positions with all the SHTP boat positions and then flag any close approaches. The row boats are all equipped with AIS on low antennas.

The script would have to do an NxM analysis.
Compare two sets of spherical coordinates (lat/lon) and create a distance vector.
Generate a report of nearest approaches in order of separation distance, and/or flag near approaches (50 NM ? ). Email report to the RC.
The script would have to open two URL's and scrub/parse the URL's for relevant data.

    Any takers out there ?

Google Great Pacific Race for data on the rowing teams.

    Thanks
    Brian

They are going to Oahu and are all WAY south of the rhumbline. So the hazard seems pretty low.

I've got 85% of this done already --

    data from here:

Their VMGs are really low -- our fleet should pass way to the north of them .

    Agreed, and thanks.

Just a precaution (" just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they arn't out to get you" [Grove]). The WestSail or Mini might go off on a hot vector seeking big breeze and apparent angle and get pretty far south, you never know.

Thanks and that was quick. I just don't have time to dabble with it.

Well the row boats also have AIS-xmit, unlike most of the floating debris, packing crates, big wads of netting and Japanese floating dock modules. I guess there won't be much overlap of our fleet with PacCup.

Yes, and a good portion of our fleet has AIS as well. That said, the row boat antenna's are nt too high. I doubt range is much more that 8 miles. It would be good to warn folks if things look dicey. As far as the Tsunami debris, I can say that from 2012 a lot of that stuff glows in the dark.

I couldn't help but laugh at this thread, not that this isn't an appropriate concern, but that it's probably low on the list of concerns for most racers.
I think most racers are thinking about leaving the bay on a flood tide into 30kts plus northerlies. I would.
Collision at sea with a kayak...I feel sorry for the kayak.
What crazy person rows across an ocean? That's like sailing alone. ; )

You know, large pieces of floating debris tend to attract fish. So it's not all bad news.

Just something else to think about as you're drifting off into NannyNooNoo land. Always sleep feet forward.

No wise one here, just a fool. As far as ruminations, they're my specialty. I'm still working on the solutions. But in the above situation you guys know better than I. The only thing I have to offer is good luck, have fun and be brave.
