Default Race to the Eclipse, 2019

July 2, 2019 a total eclipse will pass very near Pitcairn Island. It is the off season for the SHTP. This could be a perfect opportunity to stretch out the sails mid summer and race to Pitcairn. Maybe 20 days of southing to the eclipse, then a layover on the island and a return via Kauai ?

Pitcairn Island was on my destinations bucket list from years ago. I used to follow their Yahoo group. It's not easy to get there, no good anchorage or facilities. Also, if you do some research, you will find a lot of disturbing stuff about the society there.

The early social history of the island is also, as the kids would say, 'problematic'. Caroline Alexander's excellent book "The Bounty" goes over this, and picks apart the legends from verifiable fact.

Put it on your Xmas list.

Hmm...cannibalism and a declining population? I think I see the problem.

(A clown visited once to entertain the kids. They said he tasted funny.)

We will be a group of many there. There is at least one cruise ship pulling into Pitcairn just prior to the eclipse, so you just have to make sure you can outrun one or more of the cruise ship vacationers while on the island. Too bad about the clown but is it ok to laugh at that comment ?

Default Princess Cruise goes to Pitcairn

Well Princess lines goes there, oddly they just sail by while a guide gives a lecture of the history. Odd they don't make landfall. How bad could it be ?

There's no place to tie up. There's just one small inlet with a landing/ramp, just down the Hill of Difficulty from the gun shop:

Regarding your earlier comment, it sounds like you need to make sure you can outrun the locals, not the vacationers! Interesting place
