I made an offer of 55k last year, and I renewed it recently. I was turned down twice, which is probably what the owner has been doing ever since listing the boat. I'm afraid she is truly worth nothing since nobody's bought her over a 6 years period.

When I worked at a non-profit quite a few years ago, I had to explain this to people.

"But it's worth ten thousand dollars!! I'm listing it for five, and it' s not selling!!"

Well, I have news for you. You've had it for sale for two years. In that time you've paid $275 a month, every month for berth rent. That's over six thousand dollars. You haven't sailed it three times in those two years. If you'd given us the boat two years ago, you'd have gotten the tax write off for ten thousand dollars, which in your tax bracket is about 33%.... $3300.

You can't get five thousand dollars for it. The boat isn't worth what you spent over the last two years, in berth rent. What, you want to spend two MORE years of berth rent on a boat you can't sell and don't use? I can get you $3300 worth of tax break on April 15th. What do you want to do?

The amazing thing to me was how many people just couldn't see that. They KNEW their boat was worth a mint, even though they couldn't sell it.

Well, I'm excited for you. Were you able to talk with Rodger Martin?

Can I have a ride? Pretty please?

I spoke with his design engineer Ross Ween, who advised to drop the keel bulb and inspect the 4 bolts, nuts and welds, which I'm not excited about ...

    Yes, we'll share rides if/when I get a boat again :-)

Of course, I agree with David that this is big news. Now we have to hope that it doesn't fall off the container ship en route. And where do we buy tickets for rides? Me first! Me first!

Yes, congratulations are indeed in order -- although selfishly I'm disapointed that I won't have the chance to crew for you on an Atlantic crossing. :-) And thanks for including the link to the trove of photos. Nice submarine door.
