It doesn't have to be a race. Just follow the distance/nm offshore requirements in the SHTP rules and keep a log.
This also gives you a chance to see how you like it a-way out there, before buying all the stuff required for the SHTP - although part of the reason for the qualifier is to test that stuff offshore.
I "rolled my own" qualifier in 2005 (for the 2006 SHTP) and really enjoyed the solo sail. In fact I have the video, including the disco music I was playing when I passed SE Farallon...
