    Default New Transmission 4 Redsky

Redsky - Olson 34 - has been without a forward gear for two months. The marina members were asking lots of questions about why she was seen backing down the fairway several times. As of this weekend I have installed a new transmission, exhaust riser mixing elbow, and flywheel damper plate. A short tour of the marina seems to indicate it all works as nothing flew apart. The Hurth/ZF transmission was replaced with a Twin Disc TMC MG40 (Italian build) . Lucky that it was almost a drop in replacement as only the motor alignment and the shift cable needed shimming / moving. Also luckily room was made for the removal of the transmission by inflating a dock bumper under the engine as opposed to pulling the entire engine out of it's little cave. A bit more oil clean up and a touch of copper colored Rustoleum and the boat will be back patrolling the waters south of the Bay Bridge. Brian What was the cost of the new Twin Disc transmission? Did a local vendor provide it or were there shipping costs involved? About how many hours were involved in swapping out the new unit for the old Hurth?

Good detailed information on this Ericson Yachts forum thread on replacing a Hurth transmission on a Universal M25XP engine including costs, sources for the Twin Disc and some issues to consider along the way:
