    Default Ryan Finn on Jzerro

A couple of years ago, in a world and time far, far away, I went up to Port Townsend and began to follow the remarkable Russell Brown.

Now, his design is being sailed around the world by Ryan Finn. He's pretty remarkable himself. Is anybody watching Ryan Finn? He's a singlehander racing Russell Brown's wicked fast multihull design, Jzerro. He's coming up the coast and is expected in the Bay later this month. Or maybe a bit later. Could someone bring me up to speed, please?

He's currently starting up the Baja peninsula with the big breeze ahead that we've had the last couple of days.

Ryan raced the SHTP in 2004 on the family J/90, Surfinn. That was a fast, wet ride but nothing compared to his current voyage.

Ryan is trying to set the singlehanded Round the Horn record. He did however have to stop and do repairs to his water maker, etc. along the way. There is a long thread "somewhere" else following his journey and has his posts, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong. At 13,225 nm, the current NY to SF, with assistance, solo record is 81 days held by Philippe Monnet in a 60 foot trimaran in 1989. Monnet had to put into port for a week to effect repairs after hitting an iceberg.

Ryan Finn left NY aboard JZERRO on Jan. 12, 2022 and is currently approx. 300 nm SW of Cabo San Lucas after 91 days, counting a stop in Argentina. So the NY-SF record is not available to him.

As far as I know, no one has completed NY-SF, solo, non-stop. The record Ryan will set is being the first, and likely last, to complete the route in a proa. JZERRO is no ordinary proa, always keeping her(water ballasted ) ama to windward. JZERRO will be for sale when she makes the Golden Gate. Sailing from her current position to the finish is going to be a tough slog likely into fresh headwinds once past 30 N.

And since you asked, the current "official" cross country record driving a car, the "Cannonball Run," from NY to Redondo Beach is 25 hours, 39 minutes, an average of 110 mph.

Thank you, Skip! How do the Cannonballers manage traffic? Isn't that the movie w Burt Reynolds?

There's a monohull solo and a multihull crewed record.

He's right outside now- unfortunately I didn't rig the boat in time but he'll have a nice welcome from ryc.
It was pretty cool when Isabelle (90's) and later Giovanni (2013) rolled in to Pier 39 with records but those of course were crewed and on big,
powerful machines. To complete this course singlehanded on a 30 sumthin' (seemingly) fragile vessel with minimal breakage is astounding. Wishing you a safe approach Ryan!
