    Default Backup Cooking Method

    Since I sit firmly in the “Two is one, and one is none” camp, and the idea of eating Dinty Moore heated on my engine block (search for previous threads on this) is less than appealing I have been thinking about back up cooking methods.

    I have a heavy cruiser with a full galley. And it has never failed me. But what if it did? If my refrigeration went out, or my stove crapped out somehow, what is my back up? Well a store of freeze dried meals would be good. Except they work best with hot water. Granola bars and such would certainly keep me alive. But I was trying to think of a more attractive solution.

    I could get a single burner propane stove certainly. And carry some 1lb cans for emergencies. But I decided to do some testing with the Gosun Go.

    I received it yesterday and I will be testing it over the next few weeks and let you know how well it works.

    I am partially drawn to this solution because 15 years or so ago I built a huge solar concentrator hot dog cooker out of a 10 foot satellite dish for Burning Man! We called it The Solar Death Ray 3000!

    That looks really cool Tony -
    and a backup is a great idea....

    Here is something I have tried - its essentially a stainless steel chafing dish in a water proof lockable container that uses the same water activated heat packs as standard MRE "heater" meals.
    I tested it pretty extensively in 2020 on my qualifier - works great with re-heatable Indian food packs, pre-made rice, etc.
    for small boats in a seaway it has the advantage of being sealed and spill proof...

    David: that looks like a good idea for backup. Which size did you get? The http://www.barocook.net/eng/product/...-bc007-1200ml/ 40-Ounce 1200ml or smaller http://www.barocook.net/eng/product/...x-bc003-850ml/ 28-Ounce 850ml ? and Im guessing you used the 50g Heating Pack

    I have the smaller one...
    and yes, the 50g packs (I think).
    you can also find the packs from other sources... but one stop shopping is convenient.

    Very cool solution. I have concerns about how well the solar cooker will work on a moving boat. It has certainly worked well here at the house. Will test it on qualifier.

    For backup cooking for a long voyage I simply doubled up (well 3x really) on the Jet Boil. But then I didn't have a nice galley :-)
