    Default 08 SHTP'ers Poll: communication

How are you planning on doing your check-in communications?

Note that you can vote for more than one option in the poll.

I'm planning on taking an Iridium Phone and "AH Phone home" every day or every other day. I'm assuming Joan will telephone the RC. I'll also have an SSB on board for voice communication. I *might* take a laptop, and if I do then I might figure out how to send e-mail over the phone. I'm not going to get a SailMail subscription, just for the race, tho.

I'd love some coaching on e-mail and sat phones as the time draws nearer.
Oh, this is Alan H, of course, wearing my "Administrators" hat. Any user can make a poll, if they want to..

    Hi Alan,

I'm planning on SSB check in. And if things work out, Proctor for Sail Mail so I can do GRIB files. Not that I'll be up front, but I'll have a little bit of an idea of where to sail.

I have a friend who's a Ham here in Huntington Beach and I'm planning to get a general license (I think that's the right license for Ham) and call him to have him patch me to my wife Karen.

Just and addition... Notice that I didn't even see the options boxes above the e-mail. Sorry.

    Alan,

I plan to use a satphone with voice connection, and have a land-based contact email information to the RC.

Overall, I plan a decidedly low-tech approach to this event.

    Hi Alan,

I already have SSB with Pactor3 modem. I am a Ham so use Winlink and Airmail for SSB email. I also plan to buy a sat phone with data capability as a fallback. I plan to check in primarily on SSB voice unless there is a problem, but want to be able to check in using any of the other three options just in case. I didn't use the check boxes because I would be checking everything but other and didn't think this would add to your results.

    Default SHTP 08 Check-in Seabird

I plan to use SSB voice as in prior races. I also have Iridium satphone with data ability for email for back-up and gribs. If you are carrying a satphone for email I strongly urge you to consider adding GMN's X-Gate (or MaxGate for Mac users). That system can save a fortune in airtime costs compared with the basic Iridium data system. It is a very easy hookup. My reply is in the checkboxes.
    Happy New Year to all,
    Lou
