    BEAR MOON!!!
A bear moon never waxes or wains. It is the Zenith of the orbital system, that the waxing and the waning originate from!!
To suggest otherwise is a sacrilege.

Tough to call when even the RC can't get the intended answer right. And EYRIE almost DSQ'ed for not reading the full instructions, and posting twice inside 4 hours.

The conundrum was referred to the appropriate CBC committee for non-biased interpretation. Here is their decision.

EYRIE's first post, 6. Waning gibbous moon. is correct. Our 53% moon is gibbous when over half full, "gibbous meaning" "humpbacked," "convex", and "protuberant," as opposed to "crescent" or "concave."

But wait, there is more. The 53% moon is also "waning," (getting smaller) as opposed to waxing (growing bigger.)

As a result, EYRIE's first post, "waning, gibbous moon" was correct and that ended the question, thus making her second post an enlightenment to, and not a change of her first correct answer. Congrats, Synbad! Tom's

One of the reasons for this particular trivia was a friendly question asked this morning at Coffee Club: why is a moon that looks to be half a pizza pie called a "quarter moon," and there is no formal term "half moon" when moon watching. Anyone?

And maybe CBC Port Capt. Spruit can enlighten us as to the difference between a Bear Moon and Tigger Moon, and can a cow jump over either?

    Isn't "bare moon" redundant?

3rd quarter refers to the phase, not the amount of light.

    Last Quarter, Illumination: 53%"
How can it be last quarter if it is illuminated 53% (gibbous) I ask myself.

Apologies. Upon further review, we may be both correct. I viewed the moon this morning at 7:30 a.m. San Francisco time when it was still 1st Quarter. It changed over to "3rd quarter at 9:37 a.m", about the time of your post. What are the chances......

Default But there is a half moon, or at least there was

Evidently Dutch mariners used the term, as evidenced by the name of Henry Hudson’s ship “Halve Maen” that entered what we now know as Hudson River in 1609.

No Idea what lunar appearance they might have had in mind for the term though.

Since the moon is a three dimensional sphere we really only "see" a fourth of it illuminated when half full.

    Tom,
Thanks for the lead to Henry Hudson's HALVE MAEN (Half Moon.) An interesting story and voyage for sure, especially for 1609. Sailing up the then as yet to be discovered Hudson River as far as present day Albany, looking for the NW Passage, was quite a feat. https://sites.rootsweb.com/~nygreen2...halve_maen.htm

Who knows, maybe Hudson's little ship was termed a half moon due to its exaggerated sheer resembling a crescent moon?
