Sunset yesterday from out front of CBC, looking east towards Rio Del Mar and windows aflame with the sun's reflection. Two things about this view: 1)these waters are the furthest northeast of any part of Monterey Bay. 2) Due to their sheltered location, the waters are warmed, and have become home to dozens of juvenile great white sharks, 5-12 feet. So "Shark Park" is just down the road and attractive for spectators, both afloat and ashore.

Further north 80 miles, off the Farallones, the big fellows, male great whites 13-18 feet, have returned from their "shark cafe" visitation in mid-Pacific, Just last week, on one day at the Farallones, 14 individuals, 15-17' were documented.

LOA = 3'8" The twin jibs look good...simultaneously roller reefable. Can the Big C "sail" at any other windangle than downwind? My guess is not.

Apparently he hopes to sleep for 20 minute naps either sitting up or in fetal position. A problem may be that if he dogs his hatch closed to keep out water intrusion he has 40 minutes of air before he suffocates. Seems a diving snorkel might be of use? Can't wait to hear what happens when two, cornfed, Kansas bred, broad shouldered, armed Coasties step aboard for a safety inspection.

The thing about Oaxaca is in the 1990 Pacific Cup, the crew of Santa Cruz 50 #7, OAXACA, were the overall winners and called on stage at the Final Trophy Presentation to accept the Pacific Cup. There we endured the Commodore of the PCYC attempting to pronounce our boat name: "Oh-Ax-I-Ka." "Oh-Aka." "Ox-Aka." "Oaks-Aka." He finally gave up and we commandered the microphone and counted down, "3,2,1," and our 7 crew gave a mighty shout "Wha-Haka!"

That's my story and I'm sticking with it. Trick or Treat.

Michael M did not own OAXACA in 1990 when she won the Pac Cup. ...Jim Ryley of Santa Cruz YC and Saratoga did. OAXACA's original owner, Larry Burgin, named the boat in 1980. When asked why "OAXACA,?" Larry replied, "Because it sounded good." OAXACA is no longer a Santa Cruz 50, but has a stern extension and forward rudder location.

Like the Cal 40 a generation before, the Bill Lee designed and built SC-50 was/is a nearly ideal boat for racing to Hawaii. Simple, strong, light, easy to steer and sail. As well, SC-50's fit the waves, something a Santa Cruz 70 does not. As an aside, a SC-50 and Cal-40 originally weighed almost the same: 15,500 pounds. Cal 40's surf. SC-50's plane and surf. 200 miles a day is a good run for a Cal-40, 270 for a SC-50.

Bill and Lu Lee are currently in Newport, RI. for Bill's induction into the Sailing Hall of Fame. Congratulations to them!

Sled, agree with all that on Oaxaca and the SC-50s, having raced as Nav with you on Oaxaca in '81 Transpac when we had 7 new SC-50s in a drag race to Diamond Head.
I got to hit top speed of 25 kts on a wave during squall at 5 am which made my day !! We also had a M.O.B. drill on that race, with quick recovery !!
    Aloha, Capt Bob

Capt. Bob was the hero of the day on OAXACA when our foredeck person stepped up on our squall wetted bow pulpit to trip the spinnaker tack. It was slippery and over he went. Capt. Bob at the helm spun the wheel, did a quick stop and we had the MOB back aboard before he'd even passed the stern!

Capt. Bob and I go a ways back. He was cruising to Hanalei with his family aboard L-36 BELLWETHER in 1978 when the first SHTP racers arrived. There was no greeting committee, so Bob took charge, rowing over and delivering cold beer to thirsty arriving SSS skippers....

Say what? A new study shows the average Blue Whale consumes 10 million pieces (97 pounds) of microplastic per day. That can't be healthy. https://news.stanford.edu/press/view/45709
