    Dear WB CHristie,

Calculating and sync-ing the positions could be done with some degraded degree of accuracy using as estimated velocity. A spread sheet could be created. In the spirit of improving our data displays I have attached today's position report. Could you please create an XL spread sheet and associated report that shows synchronized , in time, positions ? We would happily post your results here. Frankly I don't have time to do this.

Better tracking solutions are available. It would increase the entry cost about $400 / boat to use them. If racers are OK with this in the next iteration of the race, or maybe a sponsor, "The WBCHRISTIE Single Handed Trans Pacific Race" has a nice ring, we would certainly consider switching to Yellow Brick. Total sponsor investment, about $10,000 in a normal season.

It's been the same work for 11 boats as it would have been for 23. We're a little tetchy down here. Looking forward to being in Kauai ... and collecting sailors 24/7 in squalls. That's the fun part. Apology accepted. Of course.

Were the skippers even asked? All the trackers have the ability to set intervals....

If every boat used the same device it would be possible to sync up the pings. But they don't, and the skippers had to buy them so it's their call. Look at it as a chance to do some math to extrapolate the necessary positions. Maybe create a spreadsheet to automate the adjustments?

Regarding the ratings, the Fleet Assignments page on Jibeset shows the SHTPR's in the Rating column.

Skip, Pacific Cup uses NorCal PHRF's "Downwind Ratings." That's the same system that when new, shot us in the shorts in the 2011 Spinnaker Cup! Jim A has refined the numbers since then.

Thanks for all the hard work Brian...nice to see a Pelagic on Hula! I have enquired about the cost of the trackers from yellow brick, and will report back.

"Instruments? We didn't have no stinkin' instruments. White, .5 oz, hot-knifed, custom telltales were a better indicator for downwind steering..."
I applaud the above from Skip. The look of new sailboats with a computer screen in front of the helm causes me to wonder if the new skipper didn't get enough time staring at a computer screen at work.

The random position reporting is fine intrigue. Stay tuned for final results after all boats have finished and handicaps corrected.

The interim data shows fascinating comparisons. For example, on one 24 hour period, the two Cal 40 sailboats reported a 24 distance that was about 1 mile different in the daily run of 186 miles (about).

The messages from the skippers give added insight to the challenges.

By the end of the weekend it should be the typical 15 knots DDW for everyone. But the race for FTF and maybe overall is pretty much over.

SDK, I watch cartoons on mine.

I always figured that the trackers were primarily for safety. That they provide a way for the folks at home to watch the race progress and calculate within a mile or two exactly who was ahead and who wasn't, was secondary icing on the cake.

I tried. This is what I got. Right column is estimated corrected time in seconds. In case there is sponsorship, would I be able to have "Leaderboard brought to you by todd22123?" I do not know how to upload the spreadsheet so others can check the work.

Make it a Google sheet. Just import your Excel, and make the link open to all.
