One fun number from my notes: The downwind best polars for a Santa Cruz 70 ULDB show that in 4 knots TWS the TWA should be 134, the AWA should be 77, the BS should be 4.0 knots, and your downwind VMG should be 2.8 knots.

One last trivia before we put the Westsail 32 fleet down for a hard earned nap. There is a truly astounding number associated with the Westsail 32. For a quart of Macapuno with organic blueberries on the deck at CBC, what is the allowable length for a Westsail 32 whisker pole in the SHTP, assuming you do not take a penalty by exceeding the 155% jib overlap allowed by NCPHRF.

    A. 18.3' B. Longer than a Wilderness 21. C. Longer than the Cal 2-27 DURA MATER. D. Longer than the Hawkfarm 28 EYRIE E. Longer than the O-29 HEDGEHOG. F. Too long to fit aboard the Alerion 38 SURPRISE! between her headstay and backstay. G. 7 feet longer than a stock Santa Cruz-70 spinnaker pole.

Sorry, but g.24' is not a listed answer. Please try again using the proper format. PS, a stock SC-70 spinnaker pole is 21 feet.

    A. 18.3 feet

    Ants

Based on a stock J of 18 feet. What is 0.3 feet among friends? If the SSSRace committee allows more, I don’t have a clue.

Philpott is close. Here's the rule, typos included:

3.01 One or more spinnaker poles or whisker poles may be used to pole out headsails. The length of the whisker poles may not exceed the spell out (LP) of the largest rated headsail, and may not be used for setting the spinnaker. [This modifies RRS 50.2]

Since the text instructs us to "spell out" LP, it's spelled L-U-F-F P-E-R-P-E-N-D-I-C-U-L-A-R. It's the rated boat's J length times the "Max Headsail" percentage listed on the boat's certificate. Out of the five WS32's currently listed in the NCPHRF database, Tortuga wins the prize with a LP of a whopping 27.6 feet (J of 18.4 x 150% max headsail). Patience is the pauper with just a 16.7 foot LP. I don't know about Santa Cruz 70s and the like so someone else can (once again) have the ice cream.

P.S.: Since Ragtime!'s allowed pole length was 18.6 feet and we could fly twin headsails, my little 30'er had a wingspan of over 37 feet! As written elsewhere, I actually tried this in 2008, taking two telescoping whisker poles of over 18 feet each. I broke one in a big gust but it was fun while it lasted.

Philpott wins on her second attempt. NCPHRF allows, without penalty, a 155% of J overlap for a whisker pole length (if you are rated for a 155% headsail) Since most Westsails have a J of 18.3 feet, plus or minus, that lets you have a whisker pole of 18.3 x 1.55 = 28.4'. Which is 7 feet longer than a stock Santa Cruz 70 spinnaker pole! In addition, answer D would have also been correct: "Longer than Hawkfarm 28 EYRIE."

oregonian: does any Westsail 32 you know carry a 28 foot whisker pole? That would be quite a handful for a singlehander. If the same Westsail were carrying twin 155% jibs downwind, that would be a 56 foot wingspan, from pole tip to pole tip. Yikes.

I can split hairs for three more days, then I'm retired!

NCPHRF does not limit whisker pole length. In section 10 of its Regulations (X. 3. d.) it says "Whisker pole may be of any length." So go hog wild. But the SHTP rules currently read as quoted above, and are based on the rated boat's dimensions (i.e. not the 155% max headsail allowed under general PHRF reg's).

Back to the picture and sea/wind state. On the Beaufort scale (1-3 knots) the description is "Ripples with appearance of scales are formed, without foam crests"
Based on this, I would say Saraband is in these conditions. Here is a picture taken in such conditions.... (not by me) Notice the patches of lighter wind
