Bummer about the Moore ! I certainly couldn't have ground much with that winch handle- unless it was the top of a pepper grinder !

What Captain Hedgehog is referring to is the 2014 Singlehanded Transpac when he heard a loud crack and noticed his rudder on the Wilderness 30 DOMINO floating away. The 87' CG Cutter HAWKSBILL, pictured above, left Monterey and steamed lickety split 150 miles, retrieved the good Captain, and towed DOMINO back to Monterey like Santa's sleigh behind the reindeer. A good thing, because DOMINO returned in 2016 to win the SHTP overall.

I would be remiss not to mention the 2014 SHTP was won by Steve Hodges on his Islander 36 FROLIC. You have to finish to win. And to finish, you have to start. Only 6 months to go to the 2023 SHTP.

Who pulled the drain plug? Minus 1.7 foot low tide at CBC invited many dozens to enjoy a warm late afternoon at the beach.

Hove to at Costanoa Campground for Christmas, just south of Pigeon Point, 14' RUBY camp trailer a pleasant and dry environment at the height of the recent "AR". A visit to the Lighthouse shortly after frontal passage saw spectacular seas, 15-20 feet, cresting 1/2 mile off offshore towards Ano Nuevo in the distance.

Can this 115 foot landmark lighthouse built of 500,000 bricks in 1872 be saved for future generations? The light from its 4 ton, Class 1, Fresnel lens once shown 24 miles. $19 million has been earmarked by the State of California for restoration. If you appreciate lighthouses in a spectacular setting, Pigeon Point Light is not to be missed. Surrounding hills along Highway 1 already turning mustard yellow and green.

While visiting Pigeon Point during today's storm, I was reminded of a story that happened to friend Sandy Tucker, last Coast Guard lighthouse keeper in 1974 before decommissioning. Sandy had a 400 pound pet pig, "Lester", whose tusks discouraged trespassing and vandalism. But Lester was actually a friendly soul and followed Sandy everywhere.

One day when ascending the 147 step, spiral staircase up the lighthouse, Sandy forgot to close the entrance door behind only to discover Lester had followed him up. However, Lester was afraid to turn around and come down the way he came up.

Sandy had to roll Lester up in a rug, tie the large bundle with a rope, and gently slide Lester down the steps. Not your normal lighthouse keeper duty!

Speaking of lighthouse keeper duty, I saw this the other day:

I was part of the crew that built the widow's walk on the East Brother's Lighthouse. It is a very cool place

Saw the in-keepers ad as well. Comes up every few years. Great gig for the right couple.

During my first trip around the Brothers I spotted the billboard for the B&B.
After telling my wife we scheduled a weekend.

Picked up in Point San Pablo Harbor. Climbed the ladder from the boat.
Enjoyed nice meals and a tour. Climbed the stairs to the widows walk.
Fired up the old diesel air compressor and sounded the fog horn.
Every so often I hear the distinctive dual tone from the slip in Marina Bay, Richmond, and makes me smile.
