What’s Happening at the Gulf of The Farallones and What Every Member of The SSS Needs to Know

wienke-rd-sampling-3-26-14

SSS member Carliane Johnson collects samples. Not seen, but there: sharks!

Please join us for a presentation on the “At-Sea Research of the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary (GFNMS).” Hear about ocean surveys that are being conducted and what this information is telling us about the importance of the sanctuary for birds, whales, white sharks and other wildlife.. Environmental consultant and occasional contract staff to GFNMS, Carliane Johnson, will provide this special presentation on the upwelling nutrient soup that supports an incredible foodweb from the tiniest of krill to the largest animals on earth, and how these surveys are helping us understand oceanic changes.

The presentation will follow the Vallejo 1-2 skippers’ meeting, Wednesday October 19 at 1930 hrs at the Island Yacht Club.  Feel free to pass this announcement to others and invite family and friends, too.

SH Farallones Awards Mtg – “Secrets of the Farallon Islands Revealed”

The SSS is proud to announce that Russ Bradley, Senior Scientist, Farallon Program Manager will address the Singlehanded Farallones Awards Meeting on May 25th. Russ has spent over 1,500 nights on the islands and is an expert on predators (seabirds, marine mammals, white sharks) as well as the islands’ terrestrial ecosystem (landbirds, insects, salamanders, plants, etc.). Please come and enjoy Russ’s presentation, bring your questions and/or share your Farallon experiences.

Location:  Island YC (in the Alameda Marina)
Time:  7:30 PM May 25

Round the Rocks Awards 2016 Venue Change to IYC

Sorry for the late notice folks, but the venue for the Around the Rocks Awards meeting has been changed from the usual OYC to Island YC (IYC) located in the Alameda Marina across from the Svend’s yard office.

The meeting will still be at 7:30PM, Wednesday May 4.

Gate #7 into the Alameda Marina will be the only open gate at that time. There will be a security guard at the gate who will take down a name and license plate.  Simply tell the guard you are going to Island Yacht Club.  The club is next to Svendsen’s hoist on the water.

Please observe the no-parking signs.  Parking is generally available alongside the warehouse to the left of the club looking towards the water.

Thank you IYC for hosting our meeting!

Meeting Schedule Change

We’ve made a change to the meetings calendar, adding a dedicated Awards meeting for Round the Rocks, so as to minimize conflict with the SHTP Seminar.

Here is the current state for the next few meetings:

  • Round the Rocks Skippers, April 20
  • Round the Rocks Awards, May 4  NOTE CHANGE
  • SHTP Seminar “Provisioning and Medical Considerations”, May 11
See you there.

Special Wind Presentation at the the 3BF Awards/Corinthian Skippers Meeting

The Three Bridge Fiasco Awards Meeting (and T-shirt distribution) has been changed to coincide with the Skipper’s Meeting for the next race, which is the Corinthian Race.  We’re also working on a unique design for the shirts to reflect the, uh, unique conditions we enjoyed during the race itself.

Special guest Mike Dvorak, Ph.D. will present a weather synopsis of the 3BF conditions followed by a short tutorial on Bay weather and a prognosis of expected March 29th conditions. Mike is a principal at Sailor’s Energy (sailorsenergy.com) and founder of the forthcoming Bay weather website SailTactics.com. Mike got into wind forecasting by studying offshore wind energy resources near US coasts for his PhD studies at Stanford University. He also worked as a lecturer and researcher at the University of California, Berkeley teaching about Bay weather and researching turbulence in wind farms.

Please join us at the Oakland Yacht Club Wednesday, March 26 at 7:30 pm for all the fun.
